Neem (Azadirachta indica) has been used in traditional medicine for generations, and its leaves, bark, seeds, and oil contain a variety of naturally occurring compounds. Because of this, neem is often promoted online as a remedy for numerous health problemsāincluding poor eyesight, cataracts, and dependence on glasses.
But there is an important distinction between traditional use and proven medical treatment.
There is currently no good clinical evidence that putting homemade neem-leaf preparations into the eyes can remove cataracts, restore normal vision, or eliminate the need for glasses. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health specifically advises people not to replace conventional eye treatment with unproven approaches. (NCCIH)
šļø Can Neem Cure Cataracts?
Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. When a cataract becomes advanced enough to interfere with everyday activities, the established treatment is an eye operation to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial one. (NCCIH)
There is currently no dietary supplement recommended for treating cataracts, and there is no evidence that neem-leaf juice or homemade neem eye drops can dissolve an established cataract. (NCCIH)
That means claims such as āmillions of people no longer need glasses because of neemā should be treated very cautiously.
