🇭🇺 Hungarian Kifli Cookies

📝 Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 250g (2 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 200g (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 100g (½ cup) sour cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 200g (1 cup) finely ground walnuts
  • 100g (½ cup) sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (to make a paste)

For finishing:

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the dough

  • In a bowl, mix flour and salt.
  • Add butter and rub until crumbly.
  • Mix in sour cream, egg yolk, and sugar.
  • Knead into a soft dough.
  • Wrap and chill for 1 hour.

2. Prepare the filling

  • Mix ground walnuts, sugar, vanilla, and milk.
  • Stir until it forms a thick paste.

3. Shape the cookies

  • Roll out dough thin (about 2–3 mm).
  • Cut into small triangles.
  • Place a little filling at the wide end.
  • Roll toward the tip to form crescent shapes (kifli).

4. Bake

  • Place on a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 12–15 minutes until lightly golden.

5. Finish

  • Let cool slightly.
  • Dust generously with powdered sugar.
