Pharmacist Issues a Warning to Anyone Who Takes Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and supports healthy bones, muscles, nerves, and the immune system. But like many vitamins, more is not always better.

Viral posts sometimes make vitamin D sound completely harmless because it is a vitamin. However, taking very high doses of vitamin D supplements for too long can cause serious health problems. (ODS)

☀️ Why Do We Need Vitamin D?

Your body needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium and maintain healthy bones. It also plays a role in normal muscle and nerve function.

Vitamin D can come from sunlight, certain foods, fortified foods, and supplements.

For people who are deficient, a healthcare professional may recommend supplementation.

⚠️ The Problem With Taking Too Much

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning the body can store it. Excessive amounts from supplements can cause vitamin D levels to become dangerously high.

For adults, the generally established tolerable upper intake level is 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) per day from all sources, although doctors may prescribe higher doses temporarily to treat a documented deficiency. (ODS)

That doesn’t mean everyone needs 4,000 IU per day. The appropriate amount depends on the individual.
