Hungarian Snow Crescents (Hókifli)

Ingredients:

Dough:

  • 250 g all-purpose flour
  • 200 g butter (cold, cubed)
  • 100 g sour cream
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Pinch of salt

Walnut Filling:

  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 80–100 g sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon (optional)

For coating:

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, mix flour and salt.
  2. Add the cold butter and rub it into the flour until crumbly.
  3. Add egg yolk and sour cream, then knead into a soft dough.
  4. Wrap the dough and chill for 30 minutes.
  5. For the filling, mix ground walnuts, sugar, milk, vanilla, and lemon zest until a thick paste forms.
  6. Roll the dough thin and cut into small triangles or circles.
  7. Place a small spoonful of filling on each piece.
  8. Roll or shape into crescent forms.
  9. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  10. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 12–15 minutes until lightly golden.
  11. While still warm, roll generously in powdered sugar.
