Hungarian Meatballs

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 250 g ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1/2 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbsp parsley, chopped

For the Paprika Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix breadcrumbs with milk and let soak for 2 minutes.
  2. Add beef, pork, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Shape into medium meatballs.
  4. Heat a little oil in a skillet and brown the meatballs on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same pan, melt butter and cook chopped onion until soft.
  6. Stir in flour and paprika quickly so it doesn’t burn.
  7. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.
  8. Return meatballs to the pan and simmer for 20 minutes.
  9. Stir sour cream into the sauce and cook 2 more minutes.
  10. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, nokedli, or crusty bread.
