Hungarian Haluski (Cabbage and Noodles)

  • 300 g egg noodles (or homemade dumplings)
  • 1 small head cabbage (finely shredded)
  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 3 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

1. Cook the Noodles

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Cook noodles according to package instructions.
  3. Drain and set aside.

2. Cook the Cabbage

  1. In a large pan, melt butter or heat oil.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft.
  3. Add shredded cabbage and cook over medium heat.
  4. Stir occasionally until cabbage becomes soft and slightly caramelized (about 15–20 minutes).

3. Combine

  1. Add cooked noodles to the cabbage mixture.
  2. Sprinkle paprika if using.
  3. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Toss everything together and cook for a few more minutes.

4. Serve

  • Serve hot as a main dish or side.
