
Instructions
1. Build the base
Heat oil in a large pot. Cook onions slowly until soft and golden.
2. Add paprika (important step)
Remove from heat, add paprika, stir quickly (so it doesn’t burn).
3. Add chicken
Return to heat, add chicken pieces, garlic, tomatoes, pepper, salt, and black pepper.
4. Simmer
Add broth, cover, and simmer 35–45 minutes until chicken is tender.
5. Make it creamy
Mix sour cream with flour, then stir into the sauce. Simmer gently for 5–10 minutes.
How to serve
Traditionally served with:
- Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings)
- Boiled potatoes
- Fresh bread
Tips
- Never burn paprika—it turns bitter quickly.
- Sour cream gives the signature creamy texture.
- Bone-in chicken gives the best flavor.
