Celery has become a popular ingredient in wellness trends, particularly in the form of fresh celery juice. Social-media posts often describe it as a powerful drink that can “cleanse” the blood, skin, kidneys, liver and pancreas all at once.
It sounds impressive, but the science is more nuanced.
Celery is a nutritious vegetable, but there is no good evidence that celery juice literally detoxifies or cleanses your blood, liver, kidneys or pancreas. Your body already has sophisticated systems for processing and removing waste, primarily involving the liver, kidneys, lungs and digestive system.
That doesn’t mean celery isn’t worth eating. It can absolutely be part of a healthy diet.
🥬 Why Is Celery Considered Healthy?
Celery is naturally low in calories and provides nutrients such as vitamin K, folate and potassium. It also contains water and plant compounds that contribute to its nutritional profile.
Eating celery as part of a varied diet can therefore be a healthy choice.
But there is an important difference between saying “celery is nutritious” and saying “celery cleanses your organs.”
The first is reasonable. The second is an unsupported health claim.
💧 What About Celery Juice?
Juicing celery concentrates its liquid while removing much of the fiber found in the whole vegetable.
For some people, drinking celery juice can be an enjoyable way to consume a vegetable. However, there is no established evidence that celery juice provides a special detoxification effect that ordinary vegetables cannot provide.
In fact, eating whole celery has an advantage: you retain its dietary fiber.
Fiber is important for digestive health and can help you feel fuller after eating.
🧠 Your Body Already Has a “Cleaning System”
The idea of needing a special drink to “clean your blood” is misleading.
Your body continuously regulates and filters substances through several organs.
🫘 Kidneys
Your kidneys filter the blood and help remove waste products and excess substances through urine.
🫀 Liver
The liver performs hundreds of important functions, including processing nutrients and metabolizing many substances.
🫁 Lungs
Your lungs remove carbon dioxide from the body when you breathe.
🦠 Digestive system
Your digestive tract processes food and eliminates waste.
These systems don’t need a particular vegetable juice to suddenly start working.
