🇭🇺 Hungarian Potato Dumplings

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (plus extra if needed)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • ½ tsp salt

Optional Breadcrumb Coating:

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp butter

Directions

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain well and mash until smooth. Let cool completely.
  2. Mix cooled potatoes with egg, butter, and salt. Gradually add flour and knead gently into a soft dough (add a little more flour if sticky).
  3. Shape into golf ball-sized dumplings with lightly floured hands.
  4. Bring a large pot of salted water to a gentle boil. Add dumplings and cook 5–8 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
  5. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain.

Optional:
6. Melt butter in a skillet, add breadcrumbs, and toast until golden. Roll dumplings in toasted breadcrumbs before serving.
