Who Is the Smart One? Can You Spot the Safest Choice?

At first glance, this picture looks like a simple question: Which person is making the smartest decision? 🤔🔥

Three people are dealing with a kitchen fire, but they are using completely different approaches.

Look closely at what each person is doing before choosing your answer.

🔥 Person #1: Pouring Water on the Fire

The person on the left is pouring water directly onto a pan that appears to contain burning oil.

This is a dangerous choice.

Water and hot cooking oil do not mix. When water reaches extremely hot oil, it can rapidly turn into steam and cause burning oil to splatter or spread the fire.

So although the instinct may be to use water whenever you see flames, this is one situation where water can make things much worse.

🥘 Person #2: Covering the Pan

The person in the middle is using a lid to cover the burning pan.

The basic idea is to cut off the fire’s oxygen supply.

For a small, contained pan fire, carefully covering it with a suitable lid and leaving it covered can be an appropriate response, provided it can be done safely.

The important thing is not to move a burning pan unnecessarily or put yourself at risk.

🧯 Person #3: Using a Fire Extinguisher

The person on the right is using a fire extinguisher.

Of the three choices shown, this is generally the most appropriate response when a suitable extinguisher is available and the person knows how to use it safely.

A fire extinguisher designed for the type of fire can help stop a small kitchen fire before it spreads.

However, fire extinguishers aren’t a reason to take unnecessary risks. If the fire is growing quickly, producing heavy smoke, or cannot be controlled immediately, getting everyone out and calling emergency services is more important than trying to fight the fire yourself.

🧠 So Who Is the Smart One?

👉 Number 3 is the best answer in this picture.

Number 1 is making a dangerous mistake by using water on what appears to be a grease or oil fire.

Number 2 understands the importance of cutting off the oxygen, but dealing with a fire should always be done only when it is safe to do so.

Number 3 is using an appropriate firefighting tool for a small fire.

🚨 The Most Important Lesson

A kitchen fire can become dangerous very quickly.

If you ever encounter one, don’t automatically reach for water. The safest response depends on what is burning and how large the fire is.

And if you are unsure whether you can safely control it, get away from the fire, make sure others leave too, and contact your local emergency services.
