Pörkölt (Hungarian Stew)🇭🇺

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Heat oil or lard in a large pot. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and lightly golden.
  2. Remove the pot from heat and stir in paprika (this prevents it from burning).
  3. Add the meat and mix well to coat with the onion-paprika base.
  4. Return to heat, add garlic, tomato, and green pepper. Cook for a few minutes.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and caraway seeds.
  6. Add a little water or broth, cover, and simmer on low heat.
  7. Cook for 1.5–2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the meat is tender and the sauce thickens.

🔥 Tips:

  • Do not rush—slow cooking gives the best flavor
  • Add water little by little, not too much (it should be thick, not soupy)
  • Traditionally served with nokedli (Hungarian dumplings), pasta, or bread
