Hungarian Szabolcsi Stuffed Cabbage – Don’t Lose This Recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of sour cabbage or fresh cabbage leaves
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 150 g rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 1–2 tbsp sweet paprika
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 200 g smoked meat or smoked ribs
  • 500 g sauerkraut (optional, for layering)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 700–1000 ml water or broth
  • Sour cream for serving

Instructions:

  1. Cook onion in oil until soft.
  2. Mix ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Fill cabbage leaves and roll tightly (these are the “betöltött” rolls).
  4. Layer sauerkraut and smoked meat in a large pot.
  5. Place stuffed cabbage rolls on top.
  6. Pour in water or broth until covered.
  7. Simmer slowly for 2–3 hours until everything is tender.
  8. Serve hot with sour cream and bread.
