🧾 Ingredients:

  • 1 large cabbage (or jar of sauerkraut leaves)
  • 500 g ground pork (or pork + beef mix)
  • 100 g rice (uncooked)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried marjoram (optional)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 500 ml crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 500 ml water or broth
  • 100 g smoked sausage or bacon (optional)
  • 200 ml sour cream (for serving)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Prepare cabbage:
    If using fresh cabbage, boil whole head for a few minutes, then separate leaves and trim thick stems.
    If using sauerkraut leaves, rinse lightly if too sour.

  1. Make filling:
    Sauté onion in oil until soft, add garlic briefly.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, sautéed onion, paprika, salt, pepper, and marjoram.

  1. Roll cabbage:
    Place a spoonful of filling on each leaf.
  2. Fold sides and roll tightly.

  1. Layer the pot:
    Place chopped cabbage or sauerkraut on the bottom.
  2. Add stuffed rolls and optional smoked sausage or bacon.

  1. Add sauce:
    Mix tomato paste with crushed tomatoes and water/broth, then pour over.

  1. Cook:
    Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5–2 hours until cabbage and rice are tender.
