Hungarian Paprikash Chicken (With Meatballs) 🇭🇺

📝 Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 1 kg chicken pieces (thighs or drumsticks)
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tomato (chopped) or 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 bell pepper (chopped)
  • 300 ml chicken broth
  • 150 ml sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Meatballs:

  • 300 g ground pork (or pork & beef mix)
  • 50 g rice (uncooked)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the Meatballs

  1. In a bowl, mix ground meat, rice, onion, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form small meatballs and set aside.

2. Start the Paprikash

  1. Heat oil or butter in a large pot.
  2. Sauté onion until soft.
  3. Add garlic and cook briefly.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in paprika.

3. Cook the Chicken and Meatballs

  1. Add chicken pieces and coat well with the paprika mixture.
  2. Return to heat, add tomato, bell pepper, and broth.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Add meatballs carefully into the pot.
  5. Cover and cook for 35–40 minutes until chicken is tender and meatballs are cooked through.

4. Make the Sauce

  1. Mix sour cream with flour until smooth.
  2. Add a little hot liquid to temper it.
  3. Stir into the pot and cook gently until sauce thickens.
  4. Season with salt and pepper.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot with dumplings, egg noodles, or bread.
