Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Csirkepaprikás)

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs (1 kg) chicken pieces (thighs, drumsticks)
  • 2 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tomato, chopped (or 1/2 cup canned tomatoes)
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour

Instructions

  1. Heat oil, sauté onion until soft. Add garlic.
  2. Remove from heat, stir in paprika.
  3. Add chicken, salt, pepper, tomato, and bell pepper.
  4. Pour in broth, cover, and simmer 35–40 minutes until chicken is tender.
  5. Mix sour cream with flour, stir into sauce.
  6. Simmer 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Serve hot (traditionally with dumplings or noodles).
