Easy Hungarian Goulash (Gulyás) 🇭🇺

Gulyás (Hungarian Goulash) is the most famous dish from Hungary. It’s a hearty beef soup-stew flavored with sweet paprika, onions, and vegetables. This is the easy home-style version—simple, rich, and very comforting.


Ingredients

  • 500–700 g beef (chuck or stewing beef), cubed
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 2–3 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional but traditional)
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 potatoes, cubed
  • 1 tomato, chopped (or 1 tbsp tomato paste)
  • 1 green pepper (optional)
  • 1.2–1.5 L water or beef broth
