
Instructions
- Make the dough:
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tsp sugar. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, sugar, melted butter, egg yolks, and salt. Knead until smooth and elastic (8–10 minutes).
- Cover and let rise for 1–1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
- Prepare the filling:
- Mix cocoa powder with sugar, then stir in melted butter to form a spreadable paste.
- Shape the bread:
- Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about ½ inch thick).
- Spread the cocoa filling evenly.
- Roll tightly into a log and place in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
- Bake:
- Brush the top with egg yolk + milk.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown.
- Cool & serve:
- Let cool slightly before slicing to reveal the cocoa swirls.
Tips
- For extra softness, replace part of the milk with sour cream.
- Some Hungarian families add vanilla sugar or even cinnamon to the cocoa filling.
- Delicious served slightly warm with coffee or tea.
