Almás Pite (Hungarian Apple Cake)

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 400 g all-purpose flour
  • 200 g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 100 g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2–3 tbsp sour cream

For the Apple Filling:

  • 1 kg apples, peeled and grated
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1–2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs

For Serving:

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add the egg and sour cream, then knead into a smooth dough.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal portions and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  6. Mix the grated apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  7. Roll out one portion of dough and place it in a greased baking pan.
  8. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the dough.
  9. Spread the apple filling over the breadcrumbs.
  10. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling.
  11. Seal the edges and prick the top with a fork.
  12. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden brown.
  13. Allow to cool, then dust with powdered sugar.
