A photograph of a remarkably large newborn has been circulating online with a dramatic claim:
“In 1983, a giant baby weighing 7 kilograms shocked the world. You’ll never guess what he looks like today, at 40 years old.”
The image certainly grabs attention. The baby appears exceptionally large compared with an average newborn, which naturally makes people wonder what happened to him decades later.
But there is an important problem with the viral story.
🍼 Was This Really a 7-Kilogram Baby Born in 1983?
A 7-kilogram newborn would be extraordinarily large.
For comparison, newborn boys typically weigh around 3.3 kilograms, while newborn girls average around 3.2 kilograms. A birth weight above 4 kilograms is already considered macrosomia. (ABC News)
Babies weighing around 7 kilograms have certainly been born, but they are exceptionally rare.
For example, in 2023, a baby named Angerson Santos was born in Brazil weighing approximately 7.3 kilograms and measuring 60 centimeters long. Doctors attributed his unusually large size in part to his mother’s diabetes. (The Jerusalem Post)
So a 7-kilogram newborn is absolutely possible.
However, the specific claim that the baby in this viral photograph was born in 1983 and is now a 40-year-old man is not something that can be reliably established from the photograph itself.
