🇭🇺 Hungarian Meatballs in Tomato Sauce (Paradicsomos Húsgombóc)

🧾 Ingredients

Meatballs:

  • 500 g ground beef (or beef + pork mix)
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • 80 g rice (uncooked)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 clove garlic (optional)

Tomato sauce:

  • 500 ml tomato passata (or crushed tomatoes)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1–2 tsp sugar
  • Salt & pepper
  • 500 ml water or broth

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Mix meat, onion, egg, rice, paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic.
  2. Shape into small meatballs.
  3. Heat oil in a pot and sauté onion.
  4. Add paprika, then tomato passata and water/broth.
  5. Season with sugar, salt, and pepper.
  6. Carefully add meatballs into the sauce.
  7. Simmer covered for 35–45 minutes, until rice is cooked and meatballs are tender.
  8. Stir gently and serve hot, usually with bread or mashed potatoes.
