Brown Butter Hungarian Poppy Seed Strudel – Don’t Lose This Recipe!

Ingredients:

Dough:

  • 500 g flour
  • 1 egg
  • 250 ml warm milk
  • 25 g fresh yeast or 7 g dry yeast
  • 80 g sugar
  • 80 g butter
  • Pinch of salt

Brown butter filling:

  • 150 g butter (browned until golden and nutty)
  • 200 g ground poppy seeds
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar
  • 150 ml milk
  • Lemon zest (optional)
  • Raisins (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare dough by mixing yeast with warm milk and sugar.
  2. Add flour, egg, butter, and salt, then knead into a soft dough.
  3. Let rise for about 1 hour.
  4. For filling, brown the butter in a pan until golden and fragrant.
  5. Mix poppy seeds, sugar, vanilla sugar, milk, and browned butter into a thick paste.
  6. Roll out dough and spread filling evenly.
  7. Roll tightly into a strudel shape.
  8. Place on baking tray and let rest for 15–20 minutes.
  9. Bake at 180°C for 30–35 minutes until golden.
  10. Let cool, then slice and serve.
