- 500 g (4 cups) sour cherries (fresh, frozen, or jarred)
- 1 liter (4 cups) water
- 100–150 g (½–¾ cup) sugar, to taste
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2–3 cloves (optional)
- Zest of ½ lemon
- 200 ml (¾ cup) sour cream or heavy cream
- 1–2 tbsp flour (for thickening, optional)
- Pinch of salt
