Hungarian Fisherman’s Soup (Halászlé) 🇭🇺

📝 Ingredients:

  • 500 g (1 lb) freshwater fish (carp, catfish, or mixed) – cleaned and cut into chunks
  • 2–3 tbsp oil or lard
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2–3 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1–2 hot paprika peppers (optional, for spiciness)
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1–2 bell peppers, chopped
  • 1–2 liters (4–8 cups) water
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

🥣 Instructions:

  1. Heat oil or lard in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and cook until golden.
  3. Stir in garlic and paprika (remove from heat briefly to avoid burning paprika).
  4. Add tomatoes, bell peppers, and hot peppers if using. Cook 2–3 minutes.
  5. Pour in water and bring to a boil.
  6. Add fish chunks and salt. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 20–30 minutes.
  7. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.
