🇭🇺 Hungarian Poppy Seed & Walnut Beigli

Ingredients (Dough):

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp dry yeast
  • Pinch of salt

Poppy Seed Filling:

  • 1 cup ground poppy seeds
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Walnut Filling:

  • 1 cup ground walnuts
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast; let foam 5–10 minutes.
  2. Add flour, butter, egg yolks, and salt. Knead into smooth dough.
  3. Divide dough into 2 portions and let rest 30 minutes.
  4. Cook each filling separately: combine ingredients in a saucepan and heat until thick. Let cool.
  5. Roll each dough piece into a rectangle.
  6. Spread filling evenly, then roll tightly like a log.
  7. Place on baking tray, brush with egg wash.
  8. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 30–35 minutes until golden.
  9. Cool before slicing.
