
🥜 Old Fashioned Nut Roll
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Nut Filling:
- 2 cups finely ground walnuts
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Brushing:
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp milk
Directions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla. Mix and knead until smooth and elastic (about 8–10 minutes).
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1½ hours until doubled.
Filling:
5. In a saucepan, combine walnuts, sugar, milk, and butter. Cook over medium heat until thickened (3–5 minutes). Stir in vanilla. Cool completely.
- Divide dough in half. Roll each into a rectangle (about ¼-inch thick).
- Spread half of the filling evenly over each piece.
- Roll up tightly jelly-roll style and place seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes.
- Brush with egg wash.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool completely before slicing.
