🇭🇺 Farsangi Fánk (Hungarian Doughnuts)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp rum (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Apricot jam (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast:
    Mix warm milk, 1 tbsp sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make Dough:
    In a large bowl combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
    Add egg yolks, melted butter, rum, and yeast mixture.
    Knead until smooth and elastic (8–10 minutes).
  3. Rise:
    Cover and let rise 1–1½ hours until doubled in size.
  4. Shape:
    Roll dough to ½ inch thick.
    Cut into 3-inch rounds.
    Cover and rest 30 minutes.
  5. Fry:
    Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
    Fry one side covered for 1–2 minutes.
    Flip and fry uncovered until golden brown.
    Drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve:
    Dust with powdered sugar and serve with apricot jam.
