
👩🍳 Instructions
- Cook the onions
- Heat lard in a pot.
- Add onions and cook slowly until golden and soft (this is the base of flavor).
- Add garlic + spices
- Stir in garlic and caraway seeds.
- Remove pot briefly from heat.
- Add paprika (important: don’t burn it or it turns bitter).
- Add meat
- Return pot to heat.
- Add beef cubes and stir until coated in paprika-onion mixture.
- Add vegetables
- Add tomato and green pepper.
- Simmer slowly
- Pour in a little water or broth.
- Cover and simmer gently for 1.5–2.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Add more liquid only if needed.
- Finish
- When meat is tender and sauce is thick, adjust salt and pepper.
🍽️ How to serve (traditional)
- Egg noodles (nokedli)
- Boiled potatoes
- Fresh bread
- Pickles on the side (very Hungarian!)
