🇭🇺 Hungarian Haluski (Cabbage and Noodles)

📝 Ingredients

  • 12 oz (340 g) wide egg noodles
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, finely sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional but traditional)
  • 3 tablespoons butter or oil
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika (optional, Hungarian touch 🇭🇺)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (helps caramelize the cabbage)
  • Optional: 4 slices bacon, chopped

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Cook the Noodles
Boil egg noodles in salted water according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. Cook the Cabbage
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
Add onion (and bacon if using) and cook until soft.
Stir in cabbage, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  3. Caramelize
Cook slowly for about 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage becomes soft and lightly golden brown. This step gives haluski its signature flavor.
  4. Combine
Add cooked noodles to the skillet. Toss well to coat.
Sprinkle with paprika if using and mix gently.
  5. Serve
Serve warm as a comforting main dish or as a side to roasted meats.
