Instructions
- In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add butter, eggs, vanilla, and yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes.
- Cover the dough and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled.
- Meanwhile, prepare the filling:
- Heat milk and sugar in a saucepan.
- Stir in walnuts, cinnamon, and vanilla.
- Cook for 2–3 minutes until thickened. Let cool.
- Divide dough into 2 portions. Roll each into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick.
- Spread walnut filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around edges.
- Roll tightly like a jelly roll and place seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
- Brush with egg wash.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool before slicing.
