Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add butter, eggs, vanilla, and yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the filling:
    • Heat milk and sugar in a saucepan.
    • Stir in walnuts, cinnamon, and vanilla.
    • Cook for 2–3 minutes until thickened. Let cool.
  5. Divide dough into 2 portions. Roll each into a rectangle about ¼-inch thick.
  6. Spread walnut filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around edges.
  7. Roll tightly like a jelly roll and place seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
  8. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  9. Brush with egg wash.
  10. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Cool before slicing.
