🍲 Hungarian Paprika Meatballs with Potato Pottage

(Paprikás húsgombóc krumplifőzelékkel)

Ingredients

For the paprika meatballs:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or beef & pork mix
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 tbsp oil

For the paprika sauce:

  • 1 tbsp oil or lard
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup broth or water
  • ½ cup sour cream

For the potato pottage (Krumplifőzelék):

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • Salt
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the meatballs

Mix meat, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Form small balls and brown them lightly in oil. Remove and set aside.

2️⃣ Prepare the paprika sauce

Sauté onion in oil.
Remove from heat, stir in paprika, then flour.
Add broth, return meatballs, and simmer 15 minutes.
Stir in sour cream gently.

3️⃣ Make potato pottage

Boil potatoes in salted water with bay leaf until tender.
In another pan, sauté onion in oil, add flour and paprika.
Mix into potatoes and simmer until creamy.

4️⃣ Serve

Place meatballs with paprika sauce next to creamy potato pottage.
