Hungarian Mushroom Paprikash (Gombapaprikás)

Ingredients

  • 500 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • 1½ tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 200 ml sour cream
  • 1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)
  • 1–2 tbsp water or mushroom stock

Instructions

  1. Heat oil/butter in a pan. Sauté onion until soft and lightly golden.
  2. Remove from heat, stir in paprika.
  3. Add mushrooms, salt, and pepper. Cook until mushrooms release their juices.
  4. Simmer 10–15 minutes until tender.
  5. Mix sour cream with flour (if using), stir into mushrooms.
  6. Add water/stock if needed and simmer 5 minutes.
  7. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.

Serve with

  • Nokedli (dumplings)
  • Egg noodles
  • Rice or crusty bread
