Hungarian Meatballs (Fasírt)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or mix of beef & pork)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup (50 g) breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 2–3 tbsp oil for frying

Optional sauce:

  • 1 cup tomato sauce or sour cream-based sauce

Instructions:

  1. Mix meatball mixture:
In a bowl, combine ground meat, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form meatballs:
Shape mixture into small balls, about 1–1.5 inches in diameter.
  3. Cook meatballs:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry meatballs until golden brown on all sides and cooked through (about 10–12 minutes).
  4. Optional sauce:
    • For tomato sauce: simmer meatballs in sauce 5–10 minutes.
    • For creamy style: stir in sour cream at the end and heat gently.

Serve hot with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
Classic Hungarian comfort food — tender, flavorful, and lightly spiced.
