HUNGARIAN CUSTARD SLICE – KRÉMES


👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Bake pastry:
    Roll out puff pastry sheets and bake separately at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes until golden. Let cool.

  1. Make custard:
    Heat milk with vanilla until warm.
  2. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch.
  3. Gradually add warm milk while whisking, then return to heat.
  4. Cook on low, stirring constantly until thick and smooth.

  1. Prepare meringue:
    Beat egg whites until foamy.
  2. Gradually add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

  1. Combine:
    While custard is still warm, gently fold in the meringue until smooth and airy.

  1. Assemble:
    Place one pastry layer in a tray.
  2. Spread the custard evenly over it.
  3. Top with the second pastry layer.

  1. Chill:
    Refrigerate for at least 3–4 hours until set.

  1. Dust with powdered sugar before slicing.
