Hungarian Christmas Walnut Cookies (Hókifli)


Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:
    • In a bowl, mix flour, ground walnuts, powdered sugar, and salt.
    • Cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
    • Add vanilla extract and knead into a smooth dough.
  2. Chill:
    • Wrap the dough and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
  3. Shape the cookies:
    • Take small pieces of dough and roll into short logs.
    • Shape into small crescents (like little horns).
  4. Bake:
    • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • Place cookies on a lined baking tray.
    • Bake for 12–15 minutes until lightly golden (do not overbake).
  5. Coat:
    • While still warm, roll cookies in powdered sugar mixed with vanilla sugar.
  6. Serve:
    • Let cool completely. The cookies become tender and melt-in-your-mouth.
