
Instructions:
- Caramelize the Onions
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt.
- Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until golden brown and sweet.
- Set aside a few onions for topping.
- Prepare the Meatloaf
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme.
- Mix until just combined.
- Shape & Bake
- Shape meat mixture into a loaf and place in a greased baking dish.
- Top with remaining caramelized onions.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Make the Gruyère Cream
- In a small saucepan, heat heavy cream over low heat.
- Stir in shredded Gruyère until melted and smooth.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve
- Slice meatloaf and drizzle with Gruyère cream sauce.
- Garnish with reserved caramelized onions.
💡 Tips:
- For extra flavor, mix a little Dijon mustard into the meatloaf mixture.
- Serve alongside mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables for a complete comfort meal.
- Gruyère can be substituted with Swiss or Fontina cheese if needed.
