Instructions
1. Cook the Pasta
- Boil ziti in salted water until just al dente. Drain and set aside.
2. Cook the Sausage
- In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through.
- Add onion and garlic; sauté until softened.
- Stir in marinara sauce, diced tomatoes (if using), basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–10 minutes.
3. Assemble the Baked Ziti
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine cooked pasta, sausage sauce, and ricotta cheese. Mix gently.
- Transfer half the pasta mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle half the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Layer the remaining pasta mixture and top with remaining cheeses.
4. Bake
- Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly, and lightly golden on top.
5. Serve
- Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
- Serve hot with garlic bread or a side salad for a complete meal.
✨ Tips:
- You can mix in cooked spinach or roasted vegetables for extra flavor and nutrition.
- For a spicier version, use hot Italian sausage or add red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- Leftovers reheat beautifully and taste even better the next day.
If you want, I can also give you a creamy three-cheese baked ziti version that’s extra cheesy and indulgent.
