🍰 Hungarian Custard Slice (Krémes)

Ingredients:

Pastry layers:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)

Custard filling:

  • 1 L milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 200 g sugar
  • 80 g corn starch (or flour)
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract (or vanilla sugar)

Topping:

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F).
  2. Bake the puff pastry sheets separately until golden and puffed. Let cool.
  3. In a pot, heat the milk until warm.
  4. In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and corn starch until smooth.
  5. Slowly add warm milk into the mixture, whisking constantly.
  6. Return everything to the pot and cook on medium heat, stirring until thick and creamy.
  7. Add vanilla and mix well. Let custard cool slightly.
  8. Place one pastry sheet in a tray. Spread the custard evenly on top.
  9. Cover with the second pastry sheet and press gently.
  10. Chill for at least 2–3 hours until set.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
