
Töltött paprika is a traditional Hungarian comfort dish made with bell peppers filled with seasoned meat and rice, then slowly cooked in a rich, slightly sweet tomato sauce. It is a beloved family meal often served in big pots, especially in summer when peppers are fresh and sweet.
🫑 Ingredients
For the stuffed peppers
- 6–8 medium bell peppers (yellow or green work best)
- 500 g ground pork (or pork + beef mix)
- 100 g rice (uncooked)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sweet paprika
- 1 tsp dried marjoram (optional but traditional)
For the tomato sauce
- 1 liter tomato passata (or crushed tomatoes)
- 1–2 tbsp oil or lard
- 1 tbsp flour (for thickening, optional)
- 1 tsp sugar (balances acidity, very traditional 🇭🇺)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 500 ml water or broth (adjust consistency)
