🇭🇺 Dobos Torta (Classic Hungarian Layered Cake)

🧾 Ingredients:

For the sponge layers:

  • 6 eggs (separated)
  • 150 g sugar
  • 120 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

For the chocolate buttercream:

  • 200 g butter (softened)
  • 150 g powdered sugar
  • 100 g dark chocolate (melted and cooled)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the caramel top:

  • 150 g sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or water

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Make sponge batter:
    Beat egg yolks with half the sugar and vanilla until creamy.
  2. In another bowl, beat egg whites with salt, then gradually add remaining sugar until stiff peaks form.
  3. Gently fold egg whites into yolks, then fold in flour.

  1. Bake thin layers:
    Spread batter into 5–6 thin circles on baking paper.
  2. Bake each layer at 180°C (350°F) for 6–8 minutes until lightly golden. Let cool.

  1. Make buttercream:
    Beat butter with powdered sugar until fluffy.
    Add melted chocolate and vanilla and mix until smooth.

  1. Assemble cake:
    Layer sponge sheets with chocolate cream and stack evenly.
  2. Cover sides with remaining cream.

  1. Caramel top:
    Melt sugar until golden.
    Pour quickly onto a buttered surface and spread thin.
  2. Before it hardens, cut into wedges and place on top layer.
