Traditional Hungarian Bread (Fehér Kenyér) 🇭🇺

Ingredients

  • 500 g (4 cups) bread flour
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 7 g (1 packet) dry yeast
  • 320 ml (1⅓ cups) warm water
  • 1 tbsp oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt and mix into a dough.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Cover and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  5. Shape into 2 loaves and place on a baking tray.
  6. Let rise again for 30 minutes.
  7. Cut a few slashes on top.
  8. Bake at 220°C (425°F) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
