Hungarian Jam Donuts (Fánk)

Ingredients

  • 500 g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 250 ml (1 cup) warm milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 60 g (¼ cup) sugar
  • 50 g (3 tablespoons) butter (soft)
  • 7 g (1 packet) dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar or vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Oil for frying

Filling

  • Plum jam (traditional – szilvalekvár) or any thick jam

Topping

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

1️⃣ Dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm milk. Let sit 10 minutes until foamy.

2️⃣ In a bowl mix flour, sugar, salt, egg yolks, vanilla, butter, and yeast mixture.

3️⃣ Knead until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).

4️⃣ Cover and let rise 1 hour until doubled.

5️⃣ Roll dough about 1–1.5 cm thick and cut circles.

6️⃣ Let donuts rest 20 minutes.

7️⃣ Fry in oil at 170–180°C (340–350°F) until golden on both sides.

8️⃣ Fill center with jam.

9️⃣ Dust with powdered sugar.
