🇭🇺 Easy Hungarian Goulash (Magyar Gulyás)

A comforting, paprika-rich classic straight from Hungary! This easy version of traditional Gulyás is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for family dinners.

📝 Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef chuck, cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons oil or lard
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 1 tomato, chopped (or ½ cup canned tomatoes)
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions
Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until soft and translucent.
  2. Add paprika
Remove pot from heat briefly and stir in the sweet paprika (this prevents burning and keeps flavor rich).
  3. Brown the beef
Add beef cubes and garlic. Return to heat and cook until meat is lightly browned.
  4. Season & build flavor
Stir in caraway seeds, salt, pepper, tomato, and bell pepper.
  5. Simmer
Pour in beef broth. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 60–75 minutes until beef starts to become tender.
  6. Add vegetables
Stir in carrots and potatoes. Continue cooking for another 20–30 minutes until vegetables and meat are tender.
  7. Serve
Adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot with crusty bread.

💡 Tips

  • Authentic goulash has a soup-like consistency — add more broth if needed.
  • Use high-quality Hungarian paprika for the best flavor.
  • It tastes even better the next day!

Enjoy your warm and comforting Hungarian Goulash 🇭🇺
