
Ingredients
- 2 lbs (1 kg) beef chuck, cut into cubes
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons lard or oil
- 2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
- 1 tomato, chopped (or ½ cup canned tomatoes)
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 medium potatoes, cubed
- 6 cups (1.5 liters) beef broth or water
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Instructions
- Heat lard or oil in a large pot. Add onions and cook slowly until soft and lightly golden.
- Remove from heat and stir in paprika (to prevent burning).
- Add beef cubes and stir to coat well. Return to heat.
- Add garlic, salt, pepper, caraway seeds, tomato, and bell pepper. Cook 5 minutes.
- Pour in broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer covered for about 1 hour.
- Add carrots and potatoes. Continue simmering another 30–40 minutes until beef and vegetables are tender.
- Adjust seasoning before serving.
Serve hot with fresh bread.
