
🌰 Old-Fashioned Nut Roll (Classic Walnut Roll)
Ingredients
Dough
- 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
- ½ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp salt
- 2½–3 cups all-purpose flour
Nut Filling
- 2 cups finely ground walnuts
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup warm milk
- 1 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
- Activate yeast:
Mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tbsp sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy. - Make dough:
Add remaining sugar, butter, egg, salt, and flour. Knead until soft and smooth.
Cover and let rise 1 hour, until doubled. - Prepare filling:
Mix walnuts, sugar, milk, butter, vanilla, and cinnamon into a thick paste. - Assemble:
Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread filling evenly, leaving edges clear.
Roll tightly like a jelly roll and seal edges. - Second rise:
Place on lined baking tray. Cover and rest 30 minutes. - Bake:
Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 30–35 minutes, until golden. - Cool & slice:
Let cool before slicing.

- Brush warm roll with butter for a soft crust
- Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with glaze
