Hungarian Apple Pie (Almás Pite)

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2–3 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt

Apple Filling

  • 5–6 apples, grated
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Dough
    Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Rub in butter. Add egg yolks and sour cream to form a soft dough. Divide in half and chill 30 minutes.
  2. Filling
    Mix apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Squeeze out excess liquid.
  3. Assemble
    Roll out one dough half, place in baking pan, sprinkle breadcrumbs, spread apples. Cover with second rolled dough.
  4. Bake
    Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 40–45 minutes until golden. Cool and dust with powdered sugar.
