A classic, budget-friendly chocolate cake born during the Great Depression—no eggs, no milk, no butter, yet incredibly moist and rich!
🛒 Ingredients
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp white vinegar
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water (or coffee for deeper flavor)

- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease an 8×8-inch pan.
- In the pan (or a bowl), whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
- Make three small wells; add vanilla, vinegar, and oil separately.
- Pour water over everything and mix until smooth.
- Bake 30–35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
