Hungarian Shortbread – Omlós Teasütemény

Ingredients

  • 250 g (2 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 200 g (¾ cup + 2 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
  • 100 g (½ cup) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar or vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional for finishing: powdered sugar, melted chocolate, or jam

Instructions

  1. Cream butter & sugar
    Beat the softened butter with powdered sugar and vanilla until light and creamy.
  2. Add dry ingredients
    Add flour and salt. Mix just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  3. Shape
    Form small balls, logs, or shapes using a cookie press.
    Place on a parchment-lined baking tray.
  4. Bake
    Bake at 170°C / 340°F for 12–15 minutes, until the bottoms are lightly golden.
    Keep the tops pale for a tender texture.
  5. Cool & finish
    Cool completely, then dust with powdered sugar or decorate as desired.

Tips

  • Chill dough briefly if too soft.
