1. Sauté the Onion:
- Heat the lard/oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add chopped onions and cook until soft and golden.
2. Add Paprika and Chicken:
- Remove pot from heat, stir in paprika (this prevents bitterness).
- Return to heat, add chicken pieces, and brown lightly on all sides.
3. Build the Sauce:
- Add garlic, bell pepper, tomato, salt, and pepper.
- Pour in the broth/water to just cover the chicken.
4. Simmer Until Tender:
- Cover and simmer gently for 45–60 minutes, or until chicken is fully cooked and tender.
5. Make It Creamy:
- In a small bowl, mix flour with sour cream until smooth.
- Temper with a bit of hot sauce from the pot, then stir the mixture back into the dish.
- Simmer 5 more minutes to thicken.
🍽️ Serve With:
- Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings)
- Buttered egg noodles or mashed potatoes
- Cucumber salad on the side
