Rétes (Hungarian Strudel)


Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dough:
    • Mix flour, egg, water, oil, and salt. Knead until smooth and elastic.
    • Cover and let rest 30–60 minutes.
  2. Stretch the dough:
    • Roll out slightly, then stretch by hand on a floured cloth until very thin (almost transparent).
  3. Add filling:
    • Brush dough with melted butter.
    • Sprinkle breadcrumbs, then spread apple filling evenly.
  4. Roll:
    • Using the cloth, roll the dough into a long log. Tuck ends in.
  5. Bake:
    • Place on a greased baking sheet, brush with butter.
    • Bake at 180 °C (350 °F) for 30–35 minutes until golden.
  6. Serve:
    • Let cool slightly, slice, and dust with powdered sugar.
