🇭🇺 Prekmurska Gibanica (Slovenian/Hungarian Layered Pastry)

A luxurious multi-layered dessert filled with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, and sweet cottage cheese.


Ingredients

For the Layers

  • 10–12 sheets phyllo pastry (store-bought is fine)

Poppy Seed Filling

  • 200 g ground poppy seeds
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • Zest of ½ lemon
  • 100 ml warm milk

Walnut Filling

  • 200 g ground walnuts
  • 80–100 g sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Apple Filling

  • 3–4 medium apples, grated
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Cottage Cheese Filling

  • 400 g cottage cheese (or ricotta)
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g sour cream
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla sugar

Cream Mixture (for brushing layers)

  • 200 ml sour cream
  • 100 ml milk
  • 1 egg

Butter

  • 120–150 g melted butter (for brushing phyllo)
